DAR Genealogy on the Road

Lynn Young, President General

Over the next month DAR Genealogy will be traveling to different events in order to create awareness about DAR and our amazing genealogy resources. In recent years we have made it a priority for DAR to have a presence at national genealogy conferences and other genealogy type events to not only promote DAR but to keep us up to date on the latest in genealogical education, research and practices.

Next week I am privileged to join Darryn Lickliter, Head Genealogist for NSDAR, at the Federation of Genealogical Societies National Conference, “Gone to Texas” in San Antonio, Texas. The conference will include workshops, guest speakers, an exhibitor’s hall and special events. DAR will be sponsoring a special luncheon during the conference and I will be speaking about Spain’s role in the American Revolution with an emphasis on the Texas and Louisiana areas. DAR will also have a booth set up in the exhibitor’s hall where we will provide information about DAR membership and genealogical resources that the DAR provides.  Volunteers will have laptops on site to look up information on attendees’ ancestors in our GRS database. We are so lucky to have many DAR members planning to volunteer to help us at the conference, an advanced “Thank You” to all who will help educate visitors about the work of DAR.  If you are planning to attend the FGS conference be sure to stop by the DAR table at booth number 606 and 608.

In addition, DAR has also been invited to exhibit at upcoming tapings of the PBS television series, “Genealogy Roadshow.” The show is part detective story, and part emotional journey. Participants are chosen for the show and then genealogy, history and DNA experts use family heirlooms, letters, pictures, historical documents and other clues to hunt down information about their ancestors.  The answers are then revealed on camera before a local audience, in a historic building relevant to the regions.

PBS has invited DAR along with other genealogical societies and associations to exhibit at the upcoming filming events. These events will take place in St. Louis, MO (August 23-24), New Orleans, LA (September 6-7) and Philadelphia, PA (September 13-14). The public is welcomed to these free events, so if you live in any of these areas I would encourage you to attend. Attendees are able to watch the live filming and interact with the genealogical societies in attendance. Information about attending the St. Louis filming can be found here: http://ninenet.org/GenealogyRoadshow. Information for attending the other filmings has yet to be released but when it is we will share it on the DAR Facebook and Twitter.

I am excited for DAR Genealogy to get such exposure at these upcoming events and I am sure they will be very beneficial in spreading the word about the great work of the DAR and the amazing resources we have available.
