Happy #GivingTuesday

Lynn Young, President General

Giving Tuesday was established four years ago as an annual worldwide celebration of generosity. How fitting it is to kick off the season of giving by giving back to our community, our nation and our world!

For 125 years, philanthropy has been a distinguishing hallmark of our National Society. So we applaud all the good that will come from this week's 4th Annual Giving Tuesday.

As we embrace those causes near and dear to our hearts, I have an urgent request of all Daughters. Constitution Hall is in need of immediate repair. Will you join me today to help us restore this treasured part of our Headquarters complex?

In 1929, the Daughters of the American Revolution dedicated this building as a memorial to the Constitution. Constitution Hall is the first structure erected in tribute to the Constitution of the United States of America and was designated as a National Historic Landmark Building in 1985.

Repairs to this cherished landmark include restoration of the magnificent decorative plasterwork whose true beauty and detail have been covered by coat after coat of paint over the years.  Twenty-one medallions (seven sets of three) adorn the ceiling of Constitution Hall. These classical representations of the Goddess Victoria “Victory” were once stunning accents. Today they are in disrepair, marred by cracks and peeling paint.

Our goal for Giving Tuesday is to raise $10,000 that will cover the cost to restore one set of three of these once beautiful medallions. Specifically, your gifts will help restore the three medallions that are nearest to the President General’s Reception Room, located in the northeast corner of Constitution Hall.

This medallion restoration project is part of the Guardian Trust Campaign, an initiative established at this year’s 124th Continental Congress to provide financial security for the preservation and restoration of our home and immediate restoration needs of Constitution Hall.

Daughters have always taken pride in Constitution Hall, which is considered the premier venue of this sort in our Nation’s Capital. And I know we all want future members to experience the same sense of pride when they attend Continental Congress.

Please join us today as we continue to “Guard that which is committed to thy trust.” 1 Timothy 6:2 www.dar.org/givingtuesday
