'American Spirit'—An Award-Winning Publication!

Lisa Melland, National Chair and Editor-in-Chief of American Spirit magazine and Daughters newsletters

In September, DAR Magazine’s publishing house, Hammock, Inc., submitted five entries on behalf of DAR to the MarCom Awards, an international creative competition recognizing outstanding achievement in marketing and communication. Entries come from various professions and institutions, including corporate marketing and communication departments, advertising agencies, public relations firms, design shops, production companies and freelancers. MarCom Awards are administered and judged by the Association of Marketing and Communication Professionals.

MarCom’s Platinum Award is presented to those entries judged to be among the most outstanding entries in the competition. Platinum Winners are recognized for their excellence in quality, creativity and resourcefulness. The Gold Award is presented to those entries judged to exceed the high standards of the industry norm. Honorable Mention is granted to those entries that meet the expectations of the judges.

A tremendous amount of effort and skill goes into the publication of each issue of American Spirit magazine. A huge thank you goes to our professional in-house magazine staff: Edith Rianzares, NSDAR Printing and Publications Director; Dominique Giuffrida, Publications Coordinator and LaVonne Chappell, Subscriptions Coordinator. The team works closely with Megan Hamby, Hammock, Inc. Editorial Director and her very talented staff of writers and graphic designers.

Congratulations to Edith Rianzares who is celebrating her thirty-first year as a DAR employee and is responsible for many DAR publications including the design and printing of the upcoming, updated edition of the Wide Blue Sash book that focuses on the biographies and tenures of our National Society’s President Generals.

Lastly, a huge thank you goes to our subscribers who took a leap of faith one year ago when we announced the magazine’s content and style redesign. Thank you for your support and patience as we ironed out the kinks. We have loved hearing your stories of husbands cooking dinner using the recipe from the magazine that had arrived earlier in the day and your special connections to published Patriots and other magazine subject matter.
