The American Spirit is a Tune Worth Catching

Aubrey Williams, National Chair, DAR Magazine

The May/June 2021 issue of the American Spirit magazine is on its way to mailboxes everywhere, and it is music to my ears! We have some great features with a musical and celebratory theme. Colonial dance was truly an integral part of social life for all classes. Instead of learning the latest moves via TikTok, colonists learned from dance masters who came to their homes. Additionally, popular music during the Revolution was not only entertaining but functional, often written for marches or as a rallying cry for the cause of freedom. What a time that must have been!

There’s also a feature on the 1778 Meschianza, an 18-hour sendoff party for British General William Howe and his brother Admiral Richard Howe as they departed Philadelphia, a lavish celebration held during a time when Patriots were still reeling from a terribly harsh winter at Valley Forge. It was one of the most peculiar events of the American Revolution, and I wish I could have been a fly on those walls. All of these topics are within the pages of this issue.

I personally appreciate the “Whatnot” article on how historic sites and museums are weathering the pandemic. There are so many ways that we can support these important places as their visitor numbers are drastically limited due to COVID-19. I recently needed gifts for members of my Sarah Polk Chapter, and I was able to call the President James K. Polk Home and Museum in Columbia, Tenn., to order gifts over the phone and have them shipped! My chapter also had a wonderful virtual program given by the education manager at George Mason’s Gunston Hall, including a Colonial cocktail lesson, allowing members to “visit” and learn virtually and make a donation to show our support.

On a separate note, I understand that many of you have experienced delays in receiving your magazine. I know this is very frustrating, and I appreciate your patience and kindness as we continue to navigate unprecedented challenges. I would especially like to thank our Subscriptions Coordinator, LaVonne Chappell, for her tireless efforts. She has done more than I could ever do to get our award-winning publications to your mailboxes. If you are experiencing issues with your subscription, please email [email protected]. This is the most efficient way to reach us, as phone and mail access are more limited at this time.

The magazine team also has exciting news for everyone planning to participate in the virtual 130th Continental Congress this year. This is another opportunity to take advantage of our special Congress Magazine Promotion—a reduced rate from the regular price of $48 for the 3-year subscription will be just $45 starting on June 28 through July 4. This special offer for the 3-year subscription rate of $45 is limited to online subscriptions only purchased from June 28–July 4. The reduced rate will cover new, renewal and gift subscriptions and will not be valid for phone, mail and email orders.

As you take part in this annual event virtually, head over to www.dar.org/subscribe to get this special rate, and remember to Spread the American Spirit!
