American Spirit’s 11th Annual Tribute to Women’s History Month

Elizabeth Partridge, DAR Magazine Publications Coordinator

The March/April issue of American Spirit magazine is traditionally our salute to Women’s History Month, and we shine a light on the stories of little-known women of the Colonial and early American period. Previous March/April issues have featured notable women such as Margaret Fuller, an early women’s rights activist; Elizabeth Ellet, a woman who catalogued and profiled more than 100 Colonial women in her writings; Lydia Taft, a woman who voted in 1756; and Dicey Langston, a young Patriot who passed along vital information to her brothers in the Patriot army. Of course, we also feature women’s stories throughout the year and we’re always looking for new stories to tell. Do you know of a Colonial woman who would be interesting to feature? Let us know by emailing [email protected] or drop a note on our Facebook page.

We are excited for our readers to receive their March/April 2021 issue, which continues our tradition and features Susanna Rowson, early America’s first best-selling author; Sarah Bradley Fulton, a field nurse during the Battle of Bunker Hill; the history of the salon and several women known for their social and intellectual gatherings including Sarah Kimble Knight and Elizabeth Willing Powell (whose beautiful portrait graces the cover of this issue!); and a look at coverture laws and how they affected women of that era. While these historical women and women’s issues are the focus of the March/April 2021 American Spirit magazine, this issue is also full of other interesting features as well. We sample a few favorite Colonial desserts (and offer up a few recipes that we hope readers will try at home!); visit the Davenport House and Museum in Savannah, Ga.; and discuss the Yellow Fever epidemic of 1793—not the first nor last epidemic to plague our country. There are several other fascinating articles in this issue, but you’ll have to be a subscriber for those!

Speaking of subscribing, is your subscription up to date? The rest of our 2021 editorial slate features can’t-miss articles on English country dancing; Revolutionary War-era songs and music; Colonial accessories, shoes and men’s fashion (our nod to Vogue’s September issue); trips across the country to explore historic courthouses … and so much more! At just $18, the subscription cost is a great value for a full year of our beautifully designed, award-winning magazine, and subscriptions also make a wonderful gift for any history lover. Each issue celebrates the American story from the Colonial period through the Federal period of the 1820s. In addition, members can stay abreast of the latest DAR news through our companion Daughters newsletter, which features DAR news and chapter- and member-related stories.
