DAR Genealogy Research Institute Registration Opens Tomorrow - January 10

Marcy Carter-Lovick, National Chair, DAR Genealogy Research Institute

Whether you are fine-tuning your genealogy research skills to further your personal family research, or to enhance your ability to assist others with DAR applications, you’ll find information tailored to your needs at the third annual DAR Genealogy Research Institute (GRI).

The Institute will be held Monday, May 6 through Wednesday, May 8, 2024, in our very own ‘House Beautiful’ in Washington, D.C.  A Welcome Reception will be held on Sunday, May 5 from 5 to 7 pm for all registered GRI attendees.

Professional genealogists Blaine T. Bettinger, Ph.D., J.D., the premier authority in using DNA for genealogy research, and Craig R. Scott, MA, CG, FUGA, an industry-renowned expert in military records, will be the keynote speakers for the 2024 symposium. Joining them will be your favorite DAR experts, sharing inside information on various genealogy topics. Registrar General Cynthia Moody Parnell, a featured concurrent speaker, will discuss tying your family history to historical timelines using genealogy, historical demography, DNA and even archeology!

Concurrent sessions will address how to resolve the challenge of different people living in the same place and time with the same name; finding your female Patriot; how to prove residence and service for a Patriot; and how to use early and unique church records. Other sessions will focus on cluster/FAN (family/friends, associates, and neighbors) research; mining the Genealogical Research System (GRS) for hidden treasures of information; using DNA for DAR Applications, presented by Sharon Withers, past Registrar General and current DAR DNA Network Committee National Chair, as a follow-up on Bettinger’s keynote session; and much more.

A special feature will be offered with industry expert and keynote speaker Craig Scott on Monday evening in the DAR Library.  Scott will be available for pre-scheduled one-on-one consultations with attendees, to provide customized tips on where to look ‘next’ to potentially resolve one of your vexing research challenges.

The GRI schedule also features a tour of the Library of Congress Newspaper and Current Periodical Reading Room on Tuesday evening, with optional research time. The popular behind-the-scenes tour of DAR Headquarters will be available again for those who have not previously visited our House Beautiful.

Pre-Institute Zoom sessions to provide tips on maximizing the benefits of the GRI are scheduled for mid-February, March, and April for all registrants. The first Zoom session will be held on Tuesday evening, February 13 with helpful tips such as what to bring with you and GRI attire, as well as providing an opportunity to virtually network with fellow attendees.  If you don’t have a friend or family member attending with you to share hotel expenses, the February Zoom session will be a potential opportunity to make a roommate connection.

The 2024 GRI registration fee is $485 per person, which includes access to all scheduled activities and group meals.  A link to register for the 2024 Institute will be posted as an announcement on the landing page of the DAR Members’ website tomorrow morning – January 10 at 10am ET.

Plan to register right away for the 2024 GRI, since attendance is limited!
