New Genealogy Resources for DAR Members

Danielle Teyssier, Kimberly Dotson and Brendon Burns

The Registrar General’s Department is pleased to share some new resources that may be useful to members as they are completing membership Applications or working on other genealogy projects.

Genie Clips

We’re happy to announce that new Genie Clips (short videos about different genealogy topics) have been added to the Genealogy section of the DAR Members’ Website!  The page has also been reorganized to make the videos easier to find.

First, the location-specific Genie Clips have been grouped together under the State Research category.  So far, there are videos on New York, Long Island, North Carolina, and Pennsylvania.  Other states will gradually be added to expand the collection.

Next, there are two new Genie Clips that were announced in May 2023 and give us an overview of the Supplemental review procedure.  These videos cover the presentation given by Genealogy Director, Sara Sukol, at the Registrar General’s Forum at Continental Congress.

Lastly, there is a new collection of Genie Clips about DATACFs (Data in the Corrections File).  Some of the most common queries that the Corrections Team receives are about coded Patriots.  We’ve taken a few recent real DATACFs as examples and summarized them into miniature case studies to show the research that goes into composing a DATACF.  Those chosen were typical of the lineage and service issues that the Corrections Team encounters regularly.  One of the most important things to remember is that just because a Patriot is coded, does not necessarily mean that he or she can’t be used for membership Applications and Supplementals.

To accompany this new series, we created the Genie Clip, “Intro to DATACFs”, which goes over the Genealogy Department’s DATACF procedures.  We also recommend watching the Genie Clip “Understanding Ancestor Codes” before watching these videos.

We hope these Genie Clips will help you understand some of the day-to-day work of our Corrections Team Staff.

Staff Presentations from Continental Congress
