Two New and Innovative Ways to Honor Our Patriots

Denise Doring VanBuren, President General

Looking for fresh opportunities to both salute and raise awareness of the men and women who achieved American independence? Here are two new efforts announced during Continental Congress:

“Our Patriots DAR Podcast”

Tune into the new “Our Patriots DAR Podcast,” where each episode focuses on a Patriot of the American Revolution and is taken from the popular “Our Patriots” feature of American Spirit, our award-winning DAR magazine.

We launched the new series on Independence Day, and a new episode is uploaded each Tuesday and Thursday. Since the launch, we’ve featured Freedom Fighters, Windsor Fry, Francis Marion and today, Deborah Sampson Gannett. You can find the podcast wherever your download others (e.g. Spotify, Apple Podcasts, etc.) or on our website: www.dar.org/OurPatriotsPodcast.

Only ten days and a few episodes into the series, we’ve already had 893 listeners. Please share the word with fellow chapter members, family, friends, students and others who are interested in American history in order to help us spread awareness of these brave men and women.

What’s better than subscribing to the series? How about a chance to win a subscription to American Spirit! That’s right! Members have an opportunity to make the most of their listening experience by entering the Our Patriots DAR Podcast Giveaway! It’s easy to enter – just:

  • Leave a review for the podcast on Apple Podcasts
  • Include your first name, last name, DAR chapter and state

But hurry! The giveaway ends July 27. Perhaps you’ll be the lucky reader who receives a full year of American history content beautifully illustrated on the pages of our bimonthly periodical – in addition to the knowledge that you’ve honored the memory and the spirit of our Patriot ancestors by supporting awareness of this new series.

I hope that you will listen to these inspiring accounts of American history as more episodes will continue to be released throughout the months ahead. The “Our Patriots DAR Podcast” features the true-life stories of dozens of men and women, some whose names will be familiar and some not – but all of whom will inspire.

“Our Patriots DAR Coloring Book”

Be sure to visit the DAR Store to purchase a copy of our new “Our Patriots” coloring book in the “new products” section. While written for middle school students, it will appeal to history enthusiasts of all ages through the compelling stories of 52 American Revolutionary War participants and a brief overview of the individual 13 Colonies’ roles in the struggle for independence. I extend my deep appreciation to Historian General Laura Kessler and her staff for their outstanding work on the content for this ambitious undertaking. It is illustrated by Alabama Daughter Laura Murray and was produced by DAR in conjunction with NewSouth Books of Alabama. Sincere thanks to Corresponding Secretary General Kathryn West, who led the production effort. Copies are just $10.95 and make an excellent gift for essay winners and other students.

Here are reviews for the new book, which is also available for purchase through other retailers, with a portion of the profits benefitting our Society:

"Our Patriots is a fun way to learn about the American Revolution. Within this book’s pages, you’ll discover the iconic figures of American Independence such as George Washington, Alexander Hamilton, Benjamin Franklin, and many others. You can color in Betsy Ross’s flag while reading about the history of its design. A coloring book becomes an important educational tool when it combines craft with such great information.” ― Robert Kluin, director of marketing and communications, Plimoth Patuxet Museums

“I love this book! Our Patriots is not an ordinary coloring book, but one rich in detailed historical facts and drawings about each of the 13 original colonies and the people that helped to create our nation. Thoughtfully researched, it could easily serve as a fun and creative resource for teachers. There is an extensive glossary of terms and a genealogical research guide that can help you find out if YOU have an ancestor who served during the American Revolution!” ― Marti Rosner, coauthor of The Slave Who Went to Congress

“An activity book for kids of all ages. Our Patriots is a fun, colorful way to learn about many of the important figures in the American creation story.” ― Rick Atkinson, author of The British Are Coming

I am so proud of the ways that our members and chapters have found to honor the sacrifice and strength of those who founded these United States. Thank you to all who have taken up our call to honor Our Patriots – huzzah to you and to their memories!
